From Localhost to Live – Deploying Your Laravel AI Backend

The Final Mile: Taking Your AI API to Production

We’ve architected our orchestration layer and successfully wired our Flutter frontend to our Laravel backend. On your local machine, the AI responses are snappy, and everything works perfectly. But a smart app isn't useful until it's in the hands of your users.

Deploying a backend that handles LLM API keys, database connections, and mobile application traffic requires a solid, secure environment. For full-stack developers utilizing Laravel and Flutter, deploying to a VPS (Virtual Private Server) like Hostinger offers the perfect balance of control, performance, and cost-effectiveness. Let's walk through the essential steps to get your AI backend live.

Step 1: Preparing the Server Environment

When you spin up a new VPS, you are typically starting with a blank slate (usually Ubuntu). To run a modern Laravel application, you need to configure your web server, PHP, and your database.

  • The Web Server: Nginx is highly recommended for its performance and concurrent connection handling, which is crucial when dealing with potentially slow LLM API response times.
  • The Database: While MySQL is standard, PostgreSQL is increasingly the database of choice for advanced smart apps. Its robust JSON handling and extensions like pgvector make it indispensable if you plan to implement the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) features we discussed in Part 1.
  • Process Management: Install Supervisor to keep your Laravel queue workers running. If your app processes heavy AI tasks (like generating long reports or processing images), you must push those to a background queue rather than making the user wait on a loading screen.

Step 2: Securing Your AI Credentials

The entire reason we built a Laravel middle-layer was to protect our API keys. When deploying, your .env file is your most critical asset.

Never commit your .env file to Git.

Once you clone your repository onto your Hostinger server, you will manually create the .env file. This is where you inject your production database credentials and your live OpenAI, Anthropic, or other LLM API keys.

After setting this up, always run php artisan config:cache and php artisan route:cache to optimize Laravel for production speeds.

Step 3: SSL is Mandatory for Flutter

If you try to connect your compiled Flutter application to an http:// endpoint, iOS and modern Android versions will block the request by default. Mobile operating systems strictly enforce secure connections.

You must secure your API with an SSL certificate. Fortunately, you can do this for free using Let's Encrypt and Certbot directly on your server.

Once Certbot configures Nginx, your endpoint becomes https://api.yourdomain.com/api/ask-ai, and your Flutter app will securely transmit user prompts without throwing network security exceptions.
